Man

(Please note the 'man' is being used to describe humanity as a whole here)

Man is a creature born of the earth and the evolutionary processes therein. He is singularly incapable of a purely instinctive response to his surroundings that can remain harmonious, as does the response of a lion, an ant or a dog. For should mantry and deny his higher-thinking abilities, he is doomed to eventual self-destruction. The doctrine of the 'lowest common denominator' is one which denies the hard-won advances in consciuosness which this race is known for.

Man did not advance as far as space-travel purely by accident. He did not chance upon possibilities along the way there either.
