Intelligent Design and Unintelligent Bickering

Today I will turn my attention to another thing- namely the furor over 'Intelligent Design'. This is all something which gives me cause for concern and which is filled with humourous ironies- more than could be expected. Just as 'Conservatives' support Bush, despite his Administration's attempts to undermine the very values and institutions which they seek to conserve- so we have a strange play of names and associations with Intelligent Design.

First of all we have it being supported by Christian Conservatives. Now what these people really believe in is known as Creationism, and the more fundamentalist of them believe that this happened in precisely 6 days. For myself, I agree that the Earth was to some extent created, but that it was really a case of being intelligently nurtured. Natural processes were divinely guided, through various cosmic agencies, to give her a better chance of fulfilling an embedded 'blueprint' of perfection. To me, evolution is pre-planned, yet the plan takes time and dramas as it unfolds. But I don't believe that this happened with any overpowering or sudden force- just gentle nudges in the right direction.

On the other side we have the Evolutionists, whose historical mentor, Charles Darwin, in his day was the proponent of a more intelligent, less superstitious view of things. Yet now we see them supporting the theory's primacy against all philosophical advances, to the last man. Now, take a step back, everyone. Do you really believe that everything came about by chance, that the highest forms of life are always the fittest ones? What about the delicate flower or the human intellectual, who could never for a second survive in a universe that was really dominated by a nature, 'red in tooth and claw'?

There is no stopping religious, scientific, or philosophical progress. No-one can feel secure that their particular ideology will have the last word. Newton was superseded by Einstein, Einstein to some extent by the Quantum physicists- but neither were proven wrong. There was just a finer and more revealing truth out there to be discovered, which mankind became culturally ready for. No- these truths are not divorced from the general Culture in which they are discovered- it is all linked. Newtonian physics was the thought of Imperial progress, pushing society onwards like knocking a billiard ball- whilst Einstein's relativity heralded the birth of pluralism and multicultural societies. No one of us thinks in a vacuum and this is why the truth is slowly discovered and revealed... It is divinely revealed, often through the medium of dreams, to those who seem to 'discover ' it.

So lets all stop the mob mentality. Lets give Intelligent design a chance, no matter who the present supporters of this educational advance are. Darwin was never really saying that men are simply advanced monkeys- just that their ancestors were. Also, Intelligent Design is not claiming evolution doesn't happen- just that the universe in which one finch changes into another finch is one that was, basically, intelligently designed and therefore both beautiful and capable of producing intelligent minds, with which to contemplate that beauty.

Thank-you for your time!
